Catholics, Conscience and Contraception

by New York Times | February 9. 2012

The New York Times’ Ross Douthat responds to a blogger who has been arguing the “liberal defenses of the Obama White House’s contraception-sterilization-Plan B-ella mandate.”   Blogger Kevin Drum has been advocating that the power of the state should be restrained by religious liberty only, as Douthat puts it, “where polling data shows significant support for the position or community in question.”   Douthat writes that this “recipe for majoritarian tyranny and government overreach” could be applied to any religious minority and is nothing more than “a raw appeal to power.”  (See also Douthat’s “Government and Its Rivals,” NYT, Jan. 28, 2012.)
